Home-Schusterwastl's roots
The history of Home-Schusterwastl is unique and takes us all the way to Australia —
But how does this come about, and where does the name “Schusterwastl” actually come from?
1699
It all began in 1699, when the house was still a simple farmhouse with a toilet on the balcony. Imagine having to go outside at night in the cold winter of Grossarl! The house was inherited over generations and finally bought by my grandfather. He later handed it over to my parents.
1987
... the old building was taken apart and rebuilt, reusing some parts of the old farmhouse, such as parts of the old roof truss in the summer hut standing behind the house.
After my parents divorced, my father lived alone or together with me in the house.
2023
But in 2023, we were struck by a painful stroke of fate — my father died far too early after a long battle with illness. Since it was always clear that I would take over the house one day, my mom, my sisters and I took on the challenge. But how should I finance and maintain such a large house myself at just 23 years of age?
2023
After a short thought, I decided to risk it all: We completely renovated the inside of the house and I decided to rent it out to guests for now in order to preserve it for the long term. Thanks to the support of my family, friends and especially my mom, this project became a reality.
Today
A real win-win situation: The house stayed with the family, and guests from all over the world can experience the history and charm of this special place.
But why “Schusterwastl” anyway? Many generations ago, a shoemaker lived in the old farmhouse. In German, a shoemaker is called "Schuster". His name was Sebastian, who was often fondly called “Wastl” — and this is how the name “Schusterwastl” came about. “Home” stands for what I want to offer guests: a home while traveling, a place where everyone feels welcome, whether you're looking for peace or want to explore the adventures in the region. It's about the feeling of not just being a guest, but a part of our story.
And now for the last secret: Why does the story lead all the way to Australia? My great-aunt Kathi met a ship painter in Grossarl over 60 years ago. She fell in love and moved with him to Australia, where she and her family still live today. Many years later, the ship painter named Henry faithfully painted the old farmhouse. He had the painting shipped from Australia to Grossarl, where it still hangs above the entrance to the house today and reminds us of the story of the “Schusterwastl” every day.
Without these people, Home Schusterwastl would not exist today.
